August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter, a member of the short-lived but influential group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). His work is characterised by its bright colours, simplified forms, and interest in depicting everyday life. Macke's career was cut short by his death in World War I at the age of 27. 'Tightrope Walker' exemplifies Macke's mature style. The scene depicts a circus performance, with a tightrope walker balancing above a crowd. The composition is divided into geometric planes of colour, with the red of the circus tent contrasting against the blues and greens of the background. The figures are simplified and stylised, with an emphasis on their shapes and colours rather than realistic detail. The painting captures the energy and excitement of the circus, while also conveying a sense of detachment and observation.
