Albrecht Dürer
A masterful engraving by Albrecht Dürer depicting the goddess Nemesis hovering above a detailed alpine landscape, symbolising the instability of fortune.
Albrecht Dürer created this engraving, often referred to as The Great Fortune, during the early years of the sixteenth century. The composition features a winged female figure hovering above a detailed alpine valley. She balances upon a sphere, a visual device that suggests the instability of worldly success. In her hands, she carries a golden chalice and a bridle, traditional symbols associated with the classical concept of Nemesis, the goddess of retribution who punishes human hubris. The figure is rendered with the anatomical precision that defined Dürer's approach to the human form. Her musculature is articulated through fine, controlled hatching, which creates a sense of volume and weight despite her suspended position. The drapery flowing behind her adds a sense of movement, contrasting with the stillness of the landscape below. Below the figure, the landscape is depicted with remarkable topographical detail. Dürer includes a small village nestled by a river, with buildings and terrain rendered in a style that reflects his interest in the geography of the Alps. The contrast between the monumental scale of the goddess and the miniature quality of the town creates a sense of cosmic perspective. The artist's monogram, AD, is visible in the lower right corner, a mark of his authorship and professional identity. This work demonstrates the technical mastery of the burin, allowing for a range of textures from the soft feathers of the wings to the hard surfaces of the chalice and the rocky terrain of the valley floor. It remains a primary example of the technical and intellectual ambitions of Northern Renaissance printmaking.
