A winter landscape by French Impressionist Armand Guillaumin, depicting a snow-covered valley with expressive brushwork and a palette of cool blues and warm earthy tones.
Armand Guillaumin was a founding member of the Impressionist group. He participated in six of the eight Impressionist exhibitions held in Paris. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Guillaumin worked a full-time job at the Department of Bridges and Causeways until winning the lottery in 1891. This financial freedom allowed him to focus entirely on painting, particularly in the Creuse region of central France. He was a close friend of Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne. They often painted together in the outskirts of Paris. Guillaumin was known for his interest in industrial subjects, such as factories and docks, but his later work shifted towards the rural scenery of Crozant. This area provided him with a variety of geological formations and changing light conditions. Neige depicts a winter scene in a valley. The composition is defined by a low stone wall that cuts across the foreground. Beyond this wall, the land slopes upwards into rolling hills. Guillaumin uses a palette of lavender and pale blue to represent the shadows on the snow. These colours suggest the low light of a winter afternoon. The trees on the right side of the frame are rendered in earthy reds and browns, providing a warm contrast to the cool tones of the landscape. The brushwork is thick and visible. Guillaumin applies paint in short, rhythmic strokes that follow the contours of the land. This technique gives the scene a sense of movement and texture. He avoids using pure white for the snow, instead building the surface with layers of different tints. This approach captures the reflective quality of the frozen ground under a clouded sky. The work is characterised by his later style, where his use of colour became more intense and expressive.
