A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Albert Flamen depicting two dabs on a beach, complete with maritime background elements.
This etching by Albert Flamen depicts two dabs, a species of flatfish, resting upon a sandy shore. Flamen, a Dutch artist active in Paris during the seventeenth century, produced a significant body of work focused on aquatic life and birds. His approach to printmaking combines scientific observation with the aesthetic conventions of the period.
The composition places the fish in the foreground, rendered with precise cross-hatching to define the texture of their scales and the flattened anatomy characteristic of the species. The background provides a maritime context, featuring small sailing vessels on the horizon and a section of fishing net draped over a wooden support. This inclusion of human-made objects suggests the environment of a coastal fishing community, grounding the biological subject in a specific setting.
Flamen utilised the etching process to achieve varied tonal qualities, from the fine lines of the sand to the deeper shadows beneath the fish. The Latin and French inscription, 'Limanda. La Limande', identifies the subject, reflecting the era's interest in categorising the natural world. The inclusion of 'Cum privil. Regis' indicates that the print was produced under royal privilege, a common practice for artists seeking protection for their intellectual property in the seventeenth century. This work is part of a larger series of prints documenting various fish species, demonstrating the artist's technical skill and his contribution to the genre of natural history illustration. The print offers a glimpse into the intersection of art and science during the Dutch Golden Age, where the observation of nature was both a scholarly pursuit and a subject for artistic exploration.
