This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shunjō depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Riko in the role of Oiso no Tora. The work belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which focuses on the portrayal of actors within the theatrical traditions of Edo-period Japan. Shunjō, a member of the Katsukawa school, was known for his focus on individual likenesses rather than the generic, idealised features common in earlier ukiyo-e portraiture.
The composition presents the actor in a standing pose, captured in a moment of performance. The figure wears a layered kimono, with the outer garment featuring a distinct pattern of circular motifs against a wave-like background. The artist uses a restrained colour palette, relying on soft ochre, muted red, and charcoal tones to define the form and texture of the fabric.
