Description
A late-career masterpiece by Paul Cézanne, this work depicts the iconic Mont Sainte-Victoire through a series of structured, geometric colour planes.
Paul Cézanne returned to the subject of Mont Sainte-Victoire repeatedly throughout his career, treating the limestone mountain in Provence as a primary motif for his formal investigations. This version, dating to the final years of his life, demonstrates his method of constructing space through colour planes rather than traditional linear perspective. The mountain is rendered in cool blues and greys, which recede visually, while the foreground is composed of warmer ochres and greens that advance toward the viewer.
Cézanne applied paint in systematic, parallel brushstrokes. This technique creates a rhythmic surface that unifies the composition. He reduced the natural forms of the trees and rock faces into geometric components, such as cylinders, spheres, and cones. By doing so, he moved away from the atmospheric effects favoured by the Impressionists, opting instead for a structural analysis of the scene. The pine tree on the right acts as a framing device, guiding the eye across the foreground and into the distance, where the mountain dominates the horizon.
This work reflects the artist's preoccupation with the tension between the two-dimensional surface of the canvas and the three-dimensional reality of the subject.
