A traditional Japanese woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei featuring the legendary hero Momotaro with symbolic New Year offerings.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei depicts the legendary Japanese folk hero Momotaro. The composition focuses on the figure in a moment of quiet preparation, holding a small rice cake, or mochi, while seated beside a traditional New Year offering. The artist employs a balanced use of line and colour, characteristic of the Katsukawa school, which was known for its focus on actor portraits and heroic figures. Shuntei, a student of Katsukawa Shun'ei, developed a distinct style that often incorporated bold, graphic elements alongside delicate calligraphic details. In this work, the heavy, dark fabric of the hero's garment provides a visual anchor, contrasting with the lighter, more detailed patterns of the under-robe and the crisp, clean lines of the offering stand. The inclusion of the lobster atop the rice cake is a traditional symbol of longevity and prosperity, often associated with the Japanese New Year celebrations. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo period woodblock process. Each colour block is registered with care, allowing the subtle gradients and textures to emerge. The calligraphic text in the upper corner provides narrative context, a common feature in Ukiyo-e prints that served to educate or entertain the viewer. The figure of Momotaro is rendered with a sense of calm authority, his gaze directed away from the viewer, suggesting a narrative moment captured in time. This piece offers a glimpse into the cultural iconography of the era, where folklore and artistic tradition merged to create works that were both decorative and symbolic. The composition remains clear and uncluttered, allowing the viewer to appreciate the balance between the central figure and the surrounding symbolic objects.
