This woodblock print originates from the published memoirs of Hamada Hikozō, also known as Joseph Heco. Hikozō was a Japanese castaway who became the first naturalised Japanese-American citizen. His life story, documented in Hyōryūki, provides a rare perspective on the cultural exchange between Japan and the West during the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate.
The illustration depicts a ship navigating turbulent waters, a visual representation of the perilous journey that defined Hikozō's early life. The composition uses traditional Japanese woodblock techniques, employing clear, controlled lines to define the rhythmic patterns of the waves and the structure of the vessel.
