A 1748 woodblock print by Nishikawa Sukenobu from 'Ehon Ogurayama', featuring a classical figure and a pine tree in a traditional Japanese book format.
This woodblock print originates from the 1748 publication 'Ehon Ogurayama' (Picture Book: Ogura Hill), a work by the Kyoto-based artist Nishikawa Sukenobu. Sukenobu was a prolific illustrator who produced numerous books during the mid-Edo period. His output helped popularise the use of printed books for both entertainment and education among the urban population.
The composition follows the traditional format of the Japanese ehon, or picture book, where text and image share the page to create a narrative experience. On the left, a gnarled pine tree sits upon a hillside, rendered with precise, rhythmic line work that defines the texture of the bark and the needles. The background suggests a coastal or mountainous view through simplified, repetitive wave patterns. On the right, a figure in traditional courtly attire stands in a contemplative pose, accompanied by columns of Japanese calligraphy. The text provides context for the visual scene, linking the imagery to the classical literary traditions associated with the Ogura region.
Sukenobu’s style is characterised by a balance between decorative elements and clear, readable figures. His approach to line is calligraphic, reflecting his training in traditional painting schools before he turned his attention to the commercial woodblock medium. The print demonstrates the technical capabilities of the period, where the carver translated the artist's brush strokes into a durable wooden block. This piece offers a view into the aesthetic preferences of 18th-century Japan, where literature and visual art were closely integrated. The monochromatic palette focuses the viewer's attention on the quality of the line and the arrangement of the elements within the frame. It is a representative example of the mid-Edo period's approach to book illustration, where clarity and elegance were prioritised to ensure the work remained accessible to a wide audience of readers and collectors.
