A classic Pop Art screenprint by Andy Warhol, featuring his iconic, high-contrast portrait of Marilyn Monroe.
Andy Warhol produced this iconic portrait of Marilyn Monroe in 1964, two years after the actress died. He utilised a publicity photograph from the 1953 film Niagara as his source material. By isolating the face and applying high-contrast, non-naturalistic colours, Warhol removed the image from its original cinematic context. The screenprinting process allowed for the repetition of the image, a technique central to his exploration of mass media and celebrity culture. This specific composition focuses on the stylised features of the subject. The yellow hair, pink skin, and dark lips create a flattened, graphic appearance. Warhol intentionally allowed for slight misalignments in the ink application, which draws attention to the mechanical nature of the printmaking process. This approach rejects the traditional notion of the artist as a creator of unique, hand-painted works. Instead, it positions the artwork as a product of industrial production methods. The work functions as a commentary on the commodification of fame. By treating a human face with the same repetitive, commercial aesthetic as a soup can or a detergent box, Warhol invited viewers to consider how public figures are consumed by the masses. The stark contrast between the artificial colour palette and the recognisable features of the subject creates a tension between the person and the public persona. This print remains a primary example of the Pop Art movement, reflecting the visual language of 1960s advertising and mass-market printing techniques.
