Maple Tree and Small Birds - Ito Jakuchu

Ito Jakuchu was a prominent painter of the mid-Edo period, known for his meticulous observation of the natural world. This work belongs to his celebrated series, 'Doshoku Sai-e' (Colourful Realm of Living Beings), a collection of thirty scrolls commissioned for the Shokoku-ji temple in Kyoto. The composition focuses on the delicate interplay between the gnarled, dark branches of a maple tree and the brilliant crimson foliage that dominates the visual field.

Jakuchu employs a sophisticated layering technique, applying mineral pigments to silk to achieve a specific luminosity. The maple leaves are rendered with individual attention, varying in tone from deep vermilion to lighter orange hues. Two small birds are positioned along the branches, their forms captured with precise, calligraphic brushwork that contrasts with the softer, more atmospheric treatment of the tree. The background remains a neutral, aged silk tone, which allows the saturated colours of the leaves to command attention without the need for complex spatial depth.

This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to balance decorative appeal with rigorous naturalistic detail. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured the more gestural ink-wash styles of the literati, Jakuchu utilised a dense, additive process. He often studied his subjects from life, keeping chickens and other animals in his garden to observe their movements and anatomy. This dedication to empirical study is evident in the posture and feather detail of the birds. The work is a fine example of the Kacho-ga tradition, which translates to 'flower and bird painting', a genre that has occupied a central position in Japanese art history for centuries.
