A Japanese woodblock print by Ohara Koson depicting two koi fish swimming in water. The artwork showcases the artist's mastery of colour and line, typical of the Shin-Hanga movement.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist associated with the Shin-Hanga movement. This art form revitalised traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock printing, blending it with Western influences. Koson, also known as Ohara Hōson and Shōson, initially trained in painting before turning to woodblock design. He is particularly known for his depictions of birds and flowers (kachō-e), but also produced prints of animals and fish. His work was popular both in Japan and abroad. 'Two Koi Carps' exemplifies Koson's skill in capturing the delicate details and subtle gradations of colour inherent in Japanese woodblock printing. The print features two koi fish, one a muted orange and the other a grey-blue, swimming in a pale blue body of water. The artist uses soft, flowing lines to define the forms of the fish, and the translucent quality of the water is conveyed through careful layering of colour. The composition is simple yet elegant, reflecting a deep understanding of natural forms and a refined aesthetic sensibility.
