A detailed nineteenth-century zoological illustration of a red and yellow macaw by Edward Lear, originally published in his 1832 study of parrots.
Edward Lear produced this study of the Macrocercus aracanga, now classified as Ara macao, during his early career as a zoological draughtsman. Before he gained fame for his nonsense verse, Lear was a highly skilled illustrator who spent significant time at the Zoological Society of London. His work is noted for its precision and the careful observation of avian anatomy. This print originates from his publication, Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots, which was issued between 1830 and 1832. Lear was one of the first artists to draw parrots from life rather than from preserved skins, a practice that allowed him to capture the posture and character of the birds with greater accuracy. The composition focuses on the subject against a plain background, a common convention in nineteenth-century scientific plates to ensure the viewer concentrates on the physical features of the animal. The plumage is rendered with meticulous attention to the layering of feathers, particularly the transition from the scarlet head and breast to the yellow and blue wing coverts. Lear employed lithography, a medium that allowed for a soft, painterly quality when combined with hand-applied colour. The branch upon which the macaw perches is sketched with minimal detail, serving only to provide context for the bird's stance. This approach reflects the scientific priorities of the era, where the primary goal was the accurate documentation of species for the benefit of naturalists and collectors. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition demonstrate Lear's technical proficiency and his ability to merge scientific rigour with aesthetic appeal.
