A delicate woodblock print by Kajita Hanko depicting two women reading a letter together, rendered in the traditional bijin-ga style.
This woodblock print by Kajita Hanko captures a quiet, intimate moment between two women sharing a letter. Hanko, a practitioner of the Nihonga style, brings a refined sensibility to this composition. The figures are depicted with delicate, flowing lines that define their posture and the soft folds of their kimonos. The artist employs a restrained colour palette, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the two subjects.
The scene belongs to the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. Unlike the more stylised works of the earlier Edo period, this print reflects the transition into the Meiji era, where artistic approaches began to incorporate subtle elements of realism while maintaining traditional Japanese aesthetics. The composition is balanced, with the two women positioned to draw the eye towards the letter they hold together. The patterns on their garments provide a rhythmic quality to the image, contrasting with the plain, neutral background.
Kajita Hanko was known for his ability to convey emotion through gesture and expression. Here, the slight tilt of the heads and the gentle grip on the paper suggest a shared secret or a moment of reflection. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clean registration and a thoughtful application of pigment. It is a representative example of the aesthetic values prevalent in Japanese printmaking at the turn of the twentieth century, where the focus shifted towards capturing personal, everyday experiences rather than purely theatrical or historical subjects.
