This woodblock print by Itō Shinsui depicts the Ukimidō, or Floating Hall, at Katada. It forms part of the artist's series titled Eight Views of Lake Biwa, a traditional subject in Japanese art that Shinsui reinterpreted through the lens of the Shin-hanga movement. The Shin-hanga style sought to revitalise traditional woodblock printing by incorporating Western techniques of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective while maintaining the collaborative production method of the Edo period.

The composition focuses on the temple hall, which appears to hover above the water on its wooden pilings. Shinsui employs a muted colour palette to convey the stillness of a winter evening. The heavy snowfall is rendered with white flecks against a deep blue sky, creating a sense of quiet isolation.
