A seminal work of Italian Metaphysical Art, this 1918 painting features a geometric mannequin and classical figure within a mysterious, circular composition.
Carlo Carrà painted L'ovale delle apparizioni in 1918, a period marking his transition from the dynamism of Futurism toward the stillness of Metaphysical Art. The composition is contained within a circular frame, which directs the viewer toward the central, mannequin-like figure. This figure, constructed from geometric segments, possesses a torso decorated with multicoloured panels. It stands on a circular base, positioned before a stark, architectural backdrop that resembles a multi-storey building. To the right, a second, more classical figure draped in robes stands in silence. A fish lies on the floorboards in the foreground, adding a sense of displacement to the scene. The work rejects the speed and mechanical energy associated with Carrà's earlier Futurist phase. Instead, it embraces a quiet, dreamlike atmosphere. The objects appear disconnected from their usual context, creating a sense of mystery. The use of a circular format, or tondo, echoes Renaissance traditions, yet the subject matter remains firmly rooted in the early twentieth-century exploration of the subconscious. The shadows are long and artificial, suggesting a space that exists outside of normal time. The palette is dominated by deep blues and muted earth tones, which contrast with the small, bright sections on the central mannequin. This painting is a primary example of the Metaphysical style, where everyday items are recontextualised to evoke a sense of unease or wonder. By placing these disparate elements together, Carrà invites the viewer to contemplate the relationship between objects and the space they occupy. The lack of narrative clarity ensures that the focus remains on the formal arrangement and the psychological weight of the imagery.
