A striking Fauvist interpretation of London Bridge, featuring bold, non-naturalistic colours and expressive brushwork by André Derain.
André Derain painted this view of London Bridge during his stay in the city in 1906. Commissioned by the art dealer Ambroise Vollard, the series of London scenes captures the urban environment through the lens of the Fauvist movement. Derain rejects traditional naturalistic colour, opting instead for arbitrary, non-descriptive hues to convey the atmosphere of the Thames. The composition is dominated by bold, flat planes of colour. The bridge arches are rendered in shades of yellow and ochre, while the water below is a mosaic of green, blue, and light-reflecting dabs. The sky is a warm, fiery orange, contrasting with the cooler tones of the buildings in the background. Derain uses short, thick brushstrokes to construct the scene, prioritising the expressive quality of the paint over precise architectural detail. This approach creates a sense of movement and energy, reflecting the industrial bustle of the city at the turn of the century. This work is part of a larger body of paintings Derain produced during his time in London, which also included views of the Houses of Parliament and Charing Cross Bridge. These paintings represent a period of experimentation for the artist, as he pushed the boundaries of colour theory and composition. The influence of his contemporaries, particularly Henri Matisse, is evident in the liberation of colour from its representational function. The result is a dynamic interpretation of a familiar London landmark, transformed by the subjective vision of the artist. The print captures the texture of the original oil paint, allowing the viewer to appreciate the deliberate, rhythmic application of pigment that defines Derain's approach during this period of his career.
