This ink drawing depicts a pair of shishi, or mythical guardian lions, interacting with a stone bridge and peony blossoms. The composition draws upon the traditional Japanese motif of the shishi-mai, or lion dance, often associated with the Noh play Shakkyo (Stone Bridge). In this theatrical context, the lions are frequently shown navigating a narrow stone bridge amidst cascading water and blooming peonies, which symbolise prosperity and good fortune.
The artist employs a calligraphic brush technique, using varying pressure to define the lions' manes and the texture of the stone. The ink wash provides depth to the water and the foliage, while the negative space of the paper creates a sense of air and movement. The lions are rendered with a blend of ferocity and playfulness, their bodies contorted in dynamic poses that suggest the rhythmic motion of a dance. The peonies are sketched with lighter, more delicate strokes, providing a soft contrast to the more robust forms of the lions.
This work reflects the conventions of Japanese ink painting, where the economy of line is used to convey the essence of the subject. The inclusion of the kanji characters for 'stone bridge' on the left side confirms the thematic link to the Shakkyo legend. The work is presented as a diptych, with the two panels showing different stages of the lions' movement across the bridge. The lack of colour focuses the viewer on the mastery of the brushwork and the balance between the solid forms of the creatures and the fluid elements of the water and flowers.
