A pair of traditional Japanese ink wash paintings depicting scenes from the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers.
This diptych presents two scenes from the traditional Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, a theme originating in Chinese Song dynasty poetry and painting that became a staple of Japanese ink wash tradition. Kantei employs the sumie technique, utilising varying concentrations of black ink to suggest depth, atmosphere, and the ephemeral nature of the weather.
The left panel depicts a mountainous region partially obscured by mist, with a small figure on an ox moving through the foreground. The right panel shows a bridge and a distant pavilion, framed by a steep cliff face. The composition relies on the interplay between empty space and ink-heavy forms, a hallmark of the style. The artist uses soft, blurred edges to create the effect of damp air and distance, while sharper, more defined strokes delineate the architecture and the figures.
The Eight Views theme is a classic subject for scholars and artists, representing a meditative approach to nature. The work is presented in a traditional scroll format, with decorative silk borders that frame the monochromatic imagery. The muted palette of greys, blacks, and off-white silk creates a sense of quietude. This piece reflects the influence of Chinese literati painting on Japanese artists during the Edo period, where the focus remained on capturing the essence of a scene rather than a literal representation. The brushwork is controlled, showing the discipline required to master ink wash on silk, where corrections are difficult to make. The work invites the viewer to observe the subtle transitions in tone and the balance of the composition, which remains consistent with the aesthetic values of the period.
