Suzuki Harunobu was a central figure in the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single woodblock composition. This work belongs to the shunga genre, a category of Japanese erotic art that depicted intimate encounters with a blend of realism and stylised grace. The scene is set within a domestic interior, featuring the characteristic tatami mats and shoji screens that define the aesthetic of the period.

Harunobu employs a refined line quality to delineate the figures, whose forms are rendered with a deliberate lack of heavy shading. The composition is structured to balance the figures against the geometric patterns of the background wall and the linear grid of the sliding doors. The palette remains controlled, utilising soft earth tones, muted reds, and greens that harmonise with the natural textures of the room.
