A classic example of Fauvist painting, this 1906 work by André Derain uses bold, non-naturalistic colours to capture the light of the Mediterranean coast.
André Derain painted this view of L'Estaque during his time in the south of France in 1906. This work belongs to the Fauvist period, a movement defined by the use of non-naturalistic colour and bold, expressive brushwork. Derain, alongside Henri Matisse, sought to liberate colour from its descriptive function, allowing it to exist as an independent element on the canvas.
The composition presents a Mediterranean coastal scene, yet the traditional rules of perspective are secondary to the arrangement of colour. The trees are rendered in shades of green and red, while the sea is depicted in deep blues that contrast with the warm, golden tones of the foreground. The application of paint is direct and unblended, with visible strokes that create a sense of movement across the surface. By rejecting the subtle gradations of light and shadow common in earlier academic painting, Derain focuses on the immediate sensory impact of the scene.
L'Estaque was a popular destination for artists, including Paul Cézanne and Georges Braque, who were drawn to the unique light and topography of the region. Derain's interpretation, however, is distinct for its aggressive palette and simplified forms. The painting avoids the pursuit of realism, opting instead for a subjective experience of the environment. The interplay between the cool blues of the water and the warm, fiery oranges of the earth creates a visual tension that is characteristic of the Fauvist approach. Andre Derain
Derain and Matisse spent the summer of 1905 painting together at Collioure, on the French Mediterranean coast. The canvases they produced, shown at the Salon d'Automne that autumn, prompted the critic Louis Vauxcelles to call them les Fauves, the wild beasts. A movement was born from one insult. Derain was twenty-five.
He was born in Chatou in 1880 and had originally studied to become an engineer. He met Matisse in 1898 while attending painting classes under Eugene Carriere. The Fauvist paintings are explosions of unnatural colour: trees in orange, water in violet, shadows in green. They were among the most radical works produced in Paris at the turn of the century.
By 1908, Derain was already breaking with the style. He turned to Cezanne, then passed through a Cubist phase, and by the 1920s had arrived at a fully Neoclassical manner. The wildest of the Fauves became one of the most conservative painters in France. The conservative turn brought financial success and mainstream praise. During the Second World War, the Nazis approved of his Neoclassical work. After the war, he was unjustly accused of collaboration. His reputation never fully recovered. He died in 1954.
