A 1907 Fauvist painting by Georges Braque, depicting the harbour at La Ciotat with expressive, non-naturalistic colours and rhythmic brushwork.
Painted in 1907, La Ciotat Harbor captures the coastal town in the south of France during a period when Georges Braque was heavily influenced by the Fauvist movement. Before he co-founded Cubism with Pablo Picasso, Braque experimented with the expressive potential of non-naturalistic colour and short, rhythmic brushstrokes. This work demonstrates his interest in the way light interacts with water and architecture, prioritising subjective experience over objective representation.
The composition is organised around the harbour, with boats moored in the foreground and a cluster of buildings lining the shore. Braque employs a palette of warm oranges, reds, and yellows to depict the structures, which contrast against the deep blues and purples of the water. The sky is rendered with small, staccato marks that suggest movement and atmospheric energy. These marks are characteristic of his early work, where the application of paint is deliberate and visible, creating a textured surface that draws attention to the medium itself.
Unlike his later, more analytical works, this painting retains a sense of place while pushing the boundaries of traditional representation. The buildings are simplified into geometric shapes, yet they remain recognisable. The water acts as a mirror for the sky and the town, reflecting the same intensity of colour. By using high-contrast hues, Braque creates a sense of warmth and Mediterranean light that defines the scene. This piece offers a view into the transition of Braque's style, showing the early stages of his departure from traditional perspective and his move toward the structural experimentation that would define his career.
