A textured monochrome relief by Yves Klein, featuring natural sponges saturated with intense pink pigment on canvas.
Yves Klein is widely recognised for his exploration of pure colour and the physical properties of paint. While he is most associated with his signature International Klein Blue, his practice extended into other monochromatic fields, including gold and pink. Le Rose du bleu (RE 22), created in 1960, belongs to a series of relief works where Klein incorporated natural sponges into the surface of the canvas. These sponges, saturated with pigment, create a textured, three-dimensional topography that interacts with light and shadow.
The work presents a monochromatic field of intense pink, punctuated by the porous, organic forms of the sponges. By attaching these objects to the canvas, Klein moved beyond the flat plane of traditional painting, inviting the viewer to consider the material presence of the medium itself. The sponges act as physical manifestations of the colour, absorbing and holding the pigment in a way that creates variations in tone across the surface. This approach reflects his interest in the immaterial and the sensory experience of art.
Klein often described his monochromatic works as open windows to the infinite. In this piece, the repetition of the sponge forms provides a rhythmic structure against the uniform background. The contrast between the smooth, flat areas of the canvas and the rough, irregular texture of the sponges creates a tension that defines the composition. This work is a clear example of Klein's desire to liberate colour from the constraints of form and representation, allowing it to exist as an autonomous force. The choice of pink, a colour he associated with the spiritual and the cosmic, further emphasises his conceptual approach to the act of painting.
