A raw, expressive lithograph by Constant Nieuwenhuys, featuring gestural figures and bold colour blocks in the signature style of the CoBrA movement.
Constant Nieuwenhuys, known simply as Constant, was a founding member of the CoBrA movement. This group sought to break away from traditional aesthetic constraints, favouring a spontaneous, raw approach to image-making that drew inspiration from children's drawings and folk art. Le massacre reflects this period of his career, where the human form is reduced to gestural, almost frantic marks.
The composition is defined by a sense of urgency. Dark, calligraphic lines delineate figures that appear to collapse into one another, creating a scene of chaotic movement. The artist employs a limited palette of olive, black, and stark red, which punctuates the composition like bloodstains. Two rectangular blocks of colour, one beige and one pink, provide a structural counterpoint to the fluid, agitated figures. These geometric elements suggest an interior space, yet they remain detached from the central action, adding to the unsettling nature of the work.
Constant's work during the post-war years often engaged with themes of human suffering and social upheaval. By stripping away realistic detail, he focuses on the visceral impact of the subject matter. The lines are loose and energetic, showing the artist's rejection of academic precision in favour of emotional immediacy. This print captures the experimental spirit of the CoBrA years, where the act of creation was as much about the physical application of ink as it was about the final image. The contrast between the flat, printed colour fields and the expressive, hand-drawn lines creates a tension that is characteristic of his early graphic output.
