A Post-Impressionist oil painting by Armand Guillaumin depicting the rolling hills of the Creuse valley in spring. The work features a bold palette of pink and orange with thick brushwork.
Armand Guillaumin was a founding member of the Impressionist group and participated in most of their exhibitions. While his early work aligned with Pissarro, his later paintings moved toward the intense colouration seen in this work. This painting depicts the Creuse valley in central France. Guillaumin visited this region frequently after winning a state lottery in 1891. The financial independence allowed him to paint the rugged terrain of Crozant and the surrounding countryside without commercial pressure. The composition features rolling hills rendered in bold strokes of pink, orange, violet, and yellow. These colours represent the spring blossoms and the specific light of the region. Guillaumin used a heavy impasto technique, applying thick layers of paint to create texture across the surface. The sky is a pale blue with white clouds, providing a cool contrast to the warm tones of the earth. Small houses with dark roofs are positioned on the slopes, their forms simplified into geometric shapes. Guillaumin was interested in the atmospheric effects of different seasons. In this work, he avoids traditional naturalism in favour of an expressive palette. The green shrubs in the foreground are defined by quick, vertical marks. The larger tree on the right is a mass of deep purple and red. This approach to colour was radical for the time and influenced younger artists who moved beyond literal representation. The work is a record of the artist's long association with the Creuse department, where he produced many canvases over several decades.
