This circular fan painting by Wu Guxiang (1848-1930) demonstrates the artist's engagement with the blue-and-green style of the Tang Dynasty, specifically referencing the work of the painter Yang Sheng. The composition is contained within a circular format, a common choice for fan paintings of the period, which requires a balanced arrangement of mountainous forms and negative space.
The work features steep, mineral-toned peaks rendered in shades of malachite green and azurite blue, accented with gold outlines. This technique, known as jinbi shanshui, provides a decorative quality to the mountain forms. Below the peaks, a bank of clouds is depicted with soft, layered brushwork, separating the upper reaches from the foreground. In the lower section, a small dwelling sits near a cluster of trees, which are painted with varied foliage colours to suggest the transition of seasons. The dark, ink-washed background provides a contrast to the lighter colours of the mountains, creating a sense of depth despite the flat application of pigment.
Wu Guxiang was a member of the Shanghai School, a group of artists active during the late Qing Dynasty who often looked back to earlier masters for inspiration. His work here reflects a technical precision in the application of colour and a disciplined approach to traditional motifs. The inscription in the upper left corner provides context for the work, identifying it as a study after the style of Yang Sheng, dated to the ninth month of the wuzi year, which corresponds to 1888. The painting serves as an example of the continued interest in archaic styles among nineteenth-century Chinese literati painters, who sought to maintain connections to historical artistic traditions through careful imitation and reinterpretation of classical techniques.
