A traditional Chinese ink wash painting by Liu Du, featuring monumental mountain forms and delicate brushwork in the style of the master Juran.
This work by Liu Du, an artist active during the mid-17th century, demonstrates the enduring influence of the Five Dynasties period master Juran. Liu Du adopts the characteristic 'hemp-fibre' texture strokes and rounded, monumental mountain forms associated with the Southern Tang tradition. The composition follows a vertical hanging scroll format, guiding the viewer from the detailed foreground of trees and rocky outcrops up towards the towering, mist-shrouded peaks that dominate the upper register.
Liu Du employs a subtle tonal range, using ink washes to suggest depth and atmospheric perspective. The interplay between the solid, rounded rock formations and the negative space of the river creates a sense of balance. Small architectural elements, such as a pavilion tucked into the hillside, provide a sense of scale and human presence within the vast natural environment. The brushwork is controlled and precise, reflecting the technical rigour expected of a scholar-painter during the early Qing period. By referencing the style of Juran, Liu Du engages with the historical canon of Chinese art, demonstrating his mastery of classical techniques while maintaining his own distinct approach to form and texture.
This print captures the muted, earthy tones of the original silk, preserving the delicate gradations of ink that define the mountain contours. It is a study in restraint, focusing on the structural integrity of the mountain range and the quietude of the scene. The composition avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to appreciate the rhythmic quality of the brushwork and the overall harmony of the arrangement. This piece offers a window into the aesthetic values of 17th-century Chinese literati painting, where the observation of nature is filtered through the lens of historical precedent and technical discipline.
