A serene oil painting by Maximilien Luce, capturing the autumnal light and open fields of the French countryside near Rolleboise.
Maximilien Luce, a painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work during his later years. The scene depicts the plains surrounding Rolleboise, a village in the Yvelines department of France where the artist spent significant time. Luce moved away from the strict pointillist technique of his earlier career, adopting a more fluid, painterly approach that prioritised the capture of light and atmosphere over rigid colour theory.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The foreground features a meadow rendered in soft, muted greens and ochres, suggesting the texture of grass and earth. A cluster of trees occupies the right side of the frame, their foliage painted in warm, autumnal tones of gold, amber, and burnt orange. These colours contrast with the cooler, pale blue and lavender hues of the sky, which occupies the upper portion of the canvas. The brushwork is loose and expressive, allowing the viewer to perceive the movement of the air and the changing quality of light across the open field.
Luce often turned his attention to the rural surroundings of his home in Rolleboise, finding subject matter in the quiet, unpretentious beauty of the French countryside. This work reflects his interest in the natural world, stripped of the industrial themes that occupied much of his earlier output. The application of paint is direct, with visible strokes that build form without relying on heavy outlines. The result is a quiet, observational study of a specific location, capturing the transient nature of a seasonal moment. By focusing on the interplay between the warm tones of the trees and the expansive, cool sky, Luce creates a sense of space and calm. This piece offers a clear example of his mature style, where the focus shifts toward a more personal, atmospheric interpretation of the environment.
