A refined woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu featuring Kureha, a courtesan from the Gakuiseya, captured in a moment of quiet study.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts Kureha, a celebrated courtesan from the Gakuiseya establishment. As a master of the nishiki-e, or brocade print, Harunobu revolutionised the medium by introducing multi-coloured printing techniques that allowed for a greater range of subtle hues. This work belongs to the series Selection of Beauties from the Pleasure Quarters, which focused on the figures inhabiting the Yoshiwara district of Edo. The composition is defined by the slender, ethereal figure of the woman. She is captured in a moment of quiet contemplation, her gaze directed towards the scroll she holds in her hands. Harunobu employs a delicate line quality to delineate the folds of her kimono and the soft contours of her face. The figure occupies a neutral space, free from architectural or natural elements, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to her posture and the calligraphic inscriptions surrounding her. These inscriptions, written in a flowing script, integrate text and image, a common practice in ukiyo-e prints of the period. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted greens, and the natural tone of the paper to create a sense of harmony. The artist avoids high-chroma pigments, opting instead for a balanced application that emphasises the grace of the subject. The print demonstrates the technical precision required for the registration of multiple blocks, a hallmark of Harunobu's output during the late 1760s. By focusing on the individual character of the courtesan, the artist provides a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where fashion, literature, and personal refinement were central to the culture of the pleasure quarters.
