A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei, capturing the kabuki actor Arashi Rikan II in a dramatic, rain-swept scene.
This woodblock print by Shunbaisai Hokuei depicts the kabuki actor Arashi Rikan II in the role of Akogi Heiji. The work belongs to the series Tōsei keshōkagami, or Makeup Mirrors of Our Time, which focused on the dramatic personas and stage appearances of performers in the Osaka theatre scene. Hokuei was a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking, known for his ability to capture the specific features and expressions of actors with precision.
The composition is framed within a circular reserve, a common device in actor prints of the period to focus attention on the subject. The actor is shown in a dynamic pose, holding a straw hat aloft against a background of diagonal lines that suggest heavy rain. His costume features a bold, repeating geometric pattern in blue and white, contrasting with the textured appearance of the straw garment at his back. The artist employs a clean line quality, typical of the refined aesthetic found in Osaka prints, which often prioritised the individual characterisation of the actor over the more stylised approach seen in Edo-based works.
The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers involved in the production of ukiyo-e. The subtle gradation of the blue circle behind the figure provides a sense of depth, while the stark black background emphasises the actor's pale, expressive face. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper left and lower right corners identifies the actor and the series, integrating the written word into the visual design. This piece offers a glimpse into the theatrical culture of the 19th century, documenting the intersection of performance, fashion, and print media in Japan.
