A dramatic history painting by Alexander Ivanov depicting the biblical scene of Joseph interpreting dreams within a dark prison cell.
Alexander Ivanov, a central figure in nineteenth-century Russian painting, produced this work during his early career. The composition depicts the biblical narrative from Genesis, where Joseph interprets the dreams of Pharaoh's imprisoned butler and baker. The scene is set within the confines of a dark, austere prison cell, utilising strong chiaroscuro to define the figures against the gloom.
Joseph stands centrally, his gesture directed upwards as he explains the divine meaning of the dreams. To his side, one of the prisoners leans in with an expression of intense focus. In the foreground, the other prisoner sits on the floor, his posture conveying a sense of resignation and physical confinement, emphasised by the chains visible upon his limbs. The drapery of the figures, particularly the classical folds of Joseph's garments, reflects the artist's rigorous training in the Academic tradition. The palette is restrained, dominated by deep shadows and earth tones, which serves to focus the viewer's attention on the psychological interaction between the three men.
Ivanov was known for his dedication to large-scale religious and historical subjects. This painting demonstrates his ability to manage complex narrative compositions and human anatomy. The lighting is theatrical, creating a clear separation between the illuminated figures and the surrounding darkness of the dungeon. The work remains a fine example of the Russian Academic style, which prioritised technical precision and the clear communication of moral or historical narratives. The focus on the emotional state of the subjects, rather than mere decorative detail, provides a window into the artist's approach to biblical interpretation. This print captures the tonal range of the original oil painting, preserving the dramatic tension inherent in the scene.
