A dramatic depiction of the biblical scene where King Belshazzar reacts to a supernatural prophecy, rendered with Rembrandt's signature use of light and shadow.
Rembrandt van Rijn painted Belshazzar's Feast around 1635. The work depicts a dramatic scene from the Book of Daniel, where the Babylonian King Belshazzar witnesses a disembodied hand writing a prophecy of doom upon a wall. The composition focuses on the king's reaction, capturing his terror as he turns away from the table, his eyes fixed on the glowing Hebrew characters.
Rembrandt employs his characteristic chiaroscuro technique to define the space. The light emanates from the mysterious inscription, casting deep shadows across the room and illuminating the figures in varying degrees of clarity. The king is dressed in opulent garments, featuring heavy embroidery and fur, which contrast with the darkness surrounding the banquet. The figures to his left and right display expressions of shock and confusion, adding to the psychological tension of the moment.
This painting demonstrates the artist's interest in human emotion and narrative drama. Rather than focusing on the scale of the feast, Rembrandt concentrates on the immediate, visceral response of the participants to a supernatural event. The Hebrew text, which was likely researched with the assistance of a local rabbi, is rendered with precision, adding a layer of authenticity to the biblical subject. The textures of the clothing, the sheen of the metal vessels, and the subtle play of light on the faces demonstrate the technical skill associated with the Dutch Golden Age. The work remains a primary example of how Rembrandt transformed traditional history painting into a medium for exploring complex human reactions and atmospheric depth.
