A clean, graphic woodcut by Julie de Graag depicting boys at work in a workshop, rendered in a distinct Art Nouveau style.
This woodcut by Dutch artist Julie de Graag depicts a scene of boys engaged in manual labour at a workshop bench. De Graag, a student of the Hague Academy of Visual Arts, developed a distinct graphic style characterised by clean lines and a focus on everyday subjects. Her work often reflects the influence of the Art Nouveau movement, particularly in the simplified forms and the deliberate use of black and white contrast to define space.
The composition is structured around a central workbench where the figures interact with tools and materials. The background features a window and wall-mounted storage, providing a sense of place without unnecessary detail. De Graag employs a linear approach, using outlines to separate the figures from the dark floor area. This technique creates a clear, readable image that prioritises form over texture. The figures are rendered with a degree of stylisation, typical of her approach to printmaking during the early twentieth century.
Julie de Graag was known for her technical precision in woodcutting. She often chose themes related to rural life, labour, and domesticity. This print captures a moment of quiet industry, presenting the workshop as a place of focused activity. The stark contrast between the white paper and the black ink highlights the silhouettes of the boys and the tools, creating a balanced visual arrangement. Her work remains a clear example of the graphic arts tradition in the Netherlands during this period, demonstrating a disciplined use of the woodcut medium to convey narrative through minimal means.
