A striking woodcut by Karel Petrus Cornelis de Bazel, depicting a symbolic encounter between Poseidon and a monarch, rendered in a bold, graphic style.
This woodcut by the Dutch architect and designer Karel Petrus Cornelis de Bazel displays the stark, high-contrast aesthetic characteristic of his graphic work. De Bazel was a central figure in the Dutch decorative arts movement, often drawing upon esoteric themes and geometric precision. In this composition, the artist depicts a mythological encounter between Poseidon and a monarch. The scene is rendered with a focus on linear clarity, where the sea is represented by repetitive, rhythmic waves that create a sense of motion beneath the figures.
The figure of Poseidon, positioned on the left, gestures towards the ruler who sits upon a boat. The monarch, depicted with skeletal features, holds an orb and sceptre, suggesting a meditation on mortality and the limits of earthly power. Above the monarch, a ram appears, adding a layer of symbolic weight to the narrative. The sun, positioned centrally at the horizon, acts as a geometric anchor for the entire piece, its rays radiating outwards to frame the interaction.
De Bazel utilised the woodcut medium to achieve a flat, graphic quality that emphasises the symbolic nature of the subject matter. The work avoids naturalistic shading in favour of bold, black-and-white forms. This approach reflects the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement, which prioritised the honesty of the medium and the clarity of design. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figures and the staff contrasting against the horizontal movement of the water. This print offers a glimpse into the artist's interest in mysticism and his ability to translate complex allegorical concepts into a simplified, visual language.
