Jeannette I is the first in a series of five bronze heads created by Henri Matisse between 1910 and 1916. The subject is Jeanne Vaderin, a young woman who sat for the artist during this period. This initial version remains the most naturalistic of the sequence, capturing the sitter with a degree of anatomical accuracy that Matisse would systematically dismantle in subsequent iterations.

The sculpture displays the physical evidence of the artist's process. The surface retains the marks of the modelling tool and the thumb, revealing the tactile nature of the clay original before it was cast in bronze. Matisse focuses on the structure of the head, with the hair pulled back to expose the forehead and the features rendered with a direct, unrefined energy. The eyes are defined by simple depressions, and the mouth is suggested through minimal, heavy forms.

Unlike the later versions in the series, which move toward abstraction and geometric distortion, Jeannette I maintains a recognisable human likeness. It provides a clear starting point for understanding how Matisse approached the simplification of form. By stripping away extraneous detail, he directs attention to the essential volume and mass of the subject. The bronze casting preserves the raw, immediate quality of the clay, allowing the viewer to observe the artist's decision-making process in real time. This work is a study in the reduction of form, showing the transition from traditional representation to the more conceptual approach that defined much of Matisse's sculptural output. The piece sits on a simple, block-like base, which serves to ground the expressive, organic curves of the head. It is a work that prioritises the physical presence of the material over the pursuit of photographic realism.
