A striking example of Georgia O'Keeffe's botanical series, this work uses extreme magnification to transform a woodland flower into a study of form and colour.
Georgia O'Keeffe produced a series of six paintings depicting the Jack-in-the-Pulpit flower between 1930 and 1931. This work, the third in the sequence, demonstrates her method of extreme magnification. By isolating the plant from its natural environment and enlarging its form to fill the entire frame, O'Keeffe forces the viewer to confront the anatomy of the flower in a way that transcends mere botanical observation. The composition is defined by a central, vertical axis. The spathe of the flower curls around the spadix, creating a dark, cavernous interior that contrasts with the pale, striped stem. O'Keeffe uses smooth, controlled brushwork to render the organic curves of the leaves and the structure of the bloom. The background, a soft, atmospheric blue, provides a sense of space that prevents the image from becoming purely abstract. O'Keeffe often spent summers at Lake George, New York, where she gathered specimens from the woods. Her approach to these subjects involves a reduction of detail in favour of essential form and colour. The dark, moody tones of the flower head are balanced by the lighter, cooler hues of the surrounding foliage and sky. This series represents a period where the artist moved from the representational to a more focused, structural interpretation of natural subjects. The work remains a clear example of her ability to manipulate scale and perspective to alter the viewer's perception of familiar objects.

Painted flowers large so people would look at them, built a studio in a car, collected bones from the New Mexico desert, and lived to ninety-eight.
