Giovanni Paolo Panini was a master of the veduta, a genre of painting that captured the architectural grandeur of Rome for the benefit of travellers on the Grand Tour. This work depicts the interior of the Pantheon, one of the most preserved structures from antiquity. Panini employs a precise linear perspective to draw the eye towards the oculus, the circular opening at the apex of the dome, which serves as the primary source of natural light within the composition. The painting captures the immense scale of the rotunda through the repetition of the coffered ceiling and the rhythmic placement of the Corinthian columns.
