A pair of traditional Japanese ink wash scrolls depicting plum blossoms, executed in the Muromachi period style.
This diptych, attributed to the Japanese monk-painter Byōsen Myōshitsu, represents the tradition of ink wash painting, or sumie, which flourished during the Muromachi period. The work depicts plum branches, a subject deeply embedded in East Asian aesthetic philosophy. The plum blossom is traditionally associated with resilience, as it is one of the first flowers to bloom in the cold of late winter.
Myōshitsu employs a restrained palette of monochrome ink to capture the essence of the subject. The brushwork varies between the thick, textured strokes used for the gnarled trunks and the delicate, precise lines defining the individual blossoms. The composition relies on the interplay between positive and negative space, a hallmark of Zen-influenced art. The branches extend across the vertical format, creating a sense of growth and movement that feels both controlled and spontaneous.
This style of painting was often produced by Zen monks as a form of meditative practice. The focus is not on realistic representation, but on the capture of the inner spirit of the plant. The subtle tonal gradations in the ink suggest depth and atmosphere, despite the lack of colour. The mounting, which frames the two scrolls, provides a structured border that complements the organic forms of the plum trees. This piece offers a quiet, contemplative addition to a space, reflecting the minimalist principles of Japanese ink painting.
