A 1942 Surrealist oil painting by Yves Tanguy, featuring biomorphic, sculptural forms set against a vast, atmospheric horizon.
Indefined Divisibility, painted in 1942, is a characteristic example of the work of Yves Tanguy. Following his relocation to the United States during the Second World War, Tanguy continued to refine his unique visual language. The composition features a vast, barren horizon that merges sky and ground into a singular, atmospheric void. Within this space, Tanguy places a collection of biomorphic, sculptural forms that defy easy classification. These objects possess a metallic, bone-like quality, casting long, sharp shadows across the flat surface. The precision of the rendering contrasts with the illogical nature of the forms themselves. Tanguy avoids the chaotic energy found in the work of some of his contemporaries, opting instead for a quiet, frozen stillness. The palette is dominated by cool blues, greys, and muted earth tones, which contribute to the sense of isolation and temporal suspension. Tanguy was largely self-taught, having been inspired to paint after seeing a work by Giorgio de Chirico in a gallery window. His approach to painting involved a meticulous, almost academic technique applied to entirely imaginary subjects. He did not use preparatory sketches, preferring to allow the composition to emerge directly on the canvas. This method resulted in works that appear both alien and strangely familiar. The objects in Indefined Divisibility seem to exist in a state of transition, caught between organic growth and mechanical assembly. By removing all references to human activity or recognisable architecture, Tanguy creates a space that functions according to its own internal logic. The painting invites the viewer to observe these strange entities without the interference of narrative or symbolic explanation.
