Berthe Morisot's "In the Wheatfield at Gennevilliers" captures a rural scene with loose, expressive brushwork typical of Impressionism. A boy stands in a golden wheatfield, with the buildings of Gennevilliers visible in the distance.
Berthe Morisot was a French painter and a member of the circle of painters in Paris who became known as the Impressionists. She was described by Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Mary Cassatt. Morisot was independently wealthy and able to pursue her artistic endeavours without relying on sales for income. She married Eugène Manet, brother of Édouard Manet, in 1874 and had one daughter, Julie. In this painting, Morisot captures a rural scene with a boy standing in a golden wheatfield. The buildings of Gennevilliers are visible in the distance. The brushwork is loose and expressive, typical of Impressionist techniques, with short strokes of colour used to convey the texture of the wheat and the atmosphere of the day. The colour palette is dominated by yellows and greens, with touches of blue and white in the sky. The figure of the boy is rendered with less detail, blending into the surrounding environment. The composition is simple, with the horizon line placed high in the frame, emphasising the vastness of the field.
