A reproduction of an illuminated Quran folio by the master Ottoman calligrapher Ahmed Karahisari, featuring gold leaf and traditional floral motifs.
This fine art print reproduces an illuminated page from a Quran manuscript attributed to the master calligrapher Ahmed Karahisari. Active during the sixteenth century, Karahisari served the Ottoman court and is recognised for his mastery of the Thuluth and Naskh scripts. This specific folio demonstrates the high level of technical precision associated with the period, featuring a central text block framed by elaborate borders.
The composition follows a traditional layout where the calligraphic text occupies the centre, surrounded by decorative margins known as 'tezhip'. The illumination employs a palette of gold, lapis lazuli blue, and touches of vermilion. The geometric and floral motifs within the borders reflect the aesthetic standards of the Ottoman imperial workshops. The artist uses gold leaf to create a luminous effect, which contrasts with the dark ink of the script. The balance between the negative space and the density of the ornamentation creates a sense of order and harmony.
Karahisari was known for his innovative approach to script, often pushing the boundaries of traditional proportions. His work remains a primary example of the high status afforded to the written word in Islamic art. The print captures the texture of the original paper and the delicate application of the pigments, allowing for a close examination of the brushwork and the gilding techniques. This piece is suitable for those interested in the history of the book, manuscript culture, and the development of classical calligraphy.
