A serene woodblock print by Hasui Kawase depicting the quiet grounds of Ikegami Honmonji Temple during a winter snowfall.
Hasui Kawase produced this woodblock print in 1931, capturing the quiet atmosphere of Ikegami Honmonji Temple during a snowfall. The composition focuses on a large, snow-laden pine tree that dominates the left side of the frame, its branches bowing under the weight of the winter accumulation. Below, small figures walk along the temple path, their colourful umbrellas providing a subtle contrast to the muted tones of the snowy environment. Kawase was a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, which sought to revitalise traditional Japanese woodblock printing by incorporating Western techniques of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective. Unlike the flat, graphic style of earlier Ukiyo-e, Kawase utilised complex layering to achieve a sense of depth and mood. The print demonstrates his mastery of the medium, particularly in the rendering of falling snow, which is achieved through careful carving and printing processes that suggest a soft, quiet stillness. The colour palette is restrained, relying on shades of slate grey, deep indigo, and white to convey the cold temperature of the scene. The temple gate in the background is partially obscured by the falling flakes, which adds to the sense of isolation and peace. Kawase travelled extensively throughout Japan to find subjects for his work, often returning to the same locations to observe them under different weather conditions or times of day. This print is a characteristic example of his ability to transform a familiar architectural site into a contemplative image through the careful application of light and texture. The work remains a clear representation of the Shin-hanga aesthetic, balancing technical precision with a focus on the emotional resonance of the natural world.
