A striking 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebizō IV with bold lines and expressive characterisation.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebizō IV in the role of Takemura Sadanoshin. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief, ten-month period during which Sharaku was active as an artist. His approach to the kabuki portrait differs from the idealised depictions common to the era. Instead, he employs a style of caricature that emphasises the unique physical traits and psychological intensity of the performer.
The composition is a close-up, focusing on the actor's profile. The lines are bold and deliberate, capturing the tension in the facial muscles and the specific expression required by the dramatic role. The background is a mica-dusted grey, a technique that provides a subtle, metallic sheen and draws the viewer's attention to the figure. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of red and beige to define the costume, which allows the stark contrast of the black ink to dominate the visual field.
Sharaku's work is noted for its departure from the standard conventions of ukiyo-e portraiture. Rather than smoothing over the features of the actor, he highlights the angularity of the jaw, the curve of the nose, and the sharp arch of the eyebrows. This print captures a specific moment of performance, reflecting the actor's concentration and the theatricality of the kabuki stage. The print serves as a record of a fleeting performance, preserved through the medium of the woodblock. It remains a significant example of the artist's ability to convey character through minimal, graphic means, prioritising the raw energy of the subject over decorative refinement.
