A delicate Nihonga study of hydrangeas and a butterfly, rendered in soft, atmospheric washes of blue and green on silk.
Hishida Shunso was a central figure in the development of Nihonga, a style of painting that sought to modernise traditional Japanese techniques by incorporating elements of Western realism. This work displays the characteristic soft-focus approach often associated with his later period, frequently referred to as morotai. By eschewing the traditional hard outlines of ink painting, Shunso creates a sense of atmosphere and depth through the subtle layering of colour washes.
The composition is balanced, with the clusters of hydrangea blossoms positioned to draw the eye across the silk surface. A single butterfly is captured in flight, providing a sense of movement that contrasts with the stillness of the floral subjects. The palette is restrained, relying on cool blue and green tones that sit against a warm, neutral background. This choice of colour creates a quiet, contemplative mood, typical of the artist's focus on the natural world.
Shunso studied under Okakura Tenshin at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, where he was encouraged to experiment with new methods of representation. His work often explores the relationship between light and form, moving away from the decorative flatness found in earlier Edo-period art. The application of pigment here is delicate, allowing the texture of the silk to remain visible. This print captures the nuanced gradients and soft transitions of the original, preserving the ethereal quality of the artist's brushwork. It is a representative example of the aesthetic shift occurring in Japanese art at the turn of the twentieth century, where the observation of nature was filtered through a more subjective, painterly lens.
