A serene coastal scene by Albert Marquet, 'Harbour of Menton' captures the quiet beauty of the Mediterranean with its subdued palette and fluid brushwork. This fine art print brings a touch of French Post-Impressionism to any room.
Albert Marquet, a French Post-Impressionist painter associated with the Fauvist movement, is known for his simplified, almost monochromatic depictions of coastal scenes and harbours. Born in Bordeaux, Marquet developed a style characterised by its subdued palette and emphasis on capturing the atmospheric effects of light and water. He often depicted scenes from his travels, including numerous paintings of harbours and waterfronts across Europe and North Africa. 'Harbour of Menton' exemplifies Marquet's mature style. The composition is divided into distinct horizontal bands: the foreground with boats, the expanse of water, the town rising up the hillside, and the sky above. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by blues, greens, and creams, with touches of yellow and red. Marquet's brushwork is loose and fluid, creating a sense of movement and capturing the shimmering reflections on the water's surface. The buildings of Menton are rendered with simple, geometric forms, conveying the town's architectural character without excessive detail. The overall effect is one of serene observation, capturing the quiet beauty of the Mediterranean coast.
