A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting labourers crossing a bridge at the Goyu station on the Tōkaidō road.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the thirty-sixth station of the Tōkaidō road, Goyu. The scene captures a group of labourers carrying large, square containers across a wooden bridge. Their rhythmic movement is balanced by the stillness of the surrounding environment, which includes thatched-roof buildings and a prominent willow tree. The composition employs a clear foreground and middle ground, with the bridge acting as a structural element that guides the eye across the frame. Hiroshige utilised the traditional woodblock printing technique to achieve the subtle colour gradients seen in the sky, which transitions from a deep blue at the top to a pale yellow near the horizon. The figures are rendered with simplified forms, focusing on their posture and the physical exertion of their task. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper right corner provides context, a common feature in Ukiyo-e prints of this period. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on earthy tones for the architecture and vegetation, contrasted against the blue of the water and sky. As part of the series documenting the route between Edo and Kyoto, this work reflects the travel culture of the Edo period. Hiroshige observed the daily life of travellers, merchants, and workers, presenting these scenes with a focus on atmosphere and weather conditions. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the carvers and printers who collaborated with the artist to produce these editions. The use of negative space and the arrangement of the figures create a sense of depth, despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium. This print offers a view into the historical transit routes of Japan, capturing a moment of routine activity within the broader journey along the Tōkaidō.
