Jean-Michel Basquiat's 'Glenn' (1984) is a powerful example of his Neo-expressionist style, featuring a bold, mask-like head surrounded by a collage of drawings and symbols.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat first achieved notoriety as part of the graffiti duo SAMO© before his painting career in the 1980s, achieving critical acclaim for his raw, energetic style that fused street art with expressionism. His work often addressed themes of race, identity, and social critique. He died of a drug overdose at the age of 27. His work continues to be exhibited internationally and remains highly influential. 'Glenn' (1984) is a large-scale canvas featuring Basquiat's signature blend of abstract and figurative elements. A large, mask-like head dominates the composition, rendered in bold black strokes with contrasting colours for the eyes, nose, and mouth. The head is surrounded by a collage-like background of smaller drawings, symbols, and text fragments, creating a dense, layered surface. The overall effect is one of controlled chaos, reflecting the artist's interest in the complexities of urban life and the human condition.
