A 1772 portrait of George Washington as a colonial colonel, painted by Charles Willson Peale.
Charles Willson Peale painted this portrait of George Washington in 1772, years before the American Revolutionary War. At this time, Washington was a colonel in the Virginia Regiment. Peale, who had studied in London under Benjamin West, brought a refined approach to colonial portraiture. He depicts Washington in his military uniform, which consists of a blue coat with buff facings, a waistcoat, and breeches. The artist captures the subject with a direct gaze, presenting a figure of authority and composure.
The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture. Washington stands in a three-quarter pose, his hand resting on a cane, while a sword hangs at his side. The background features a muted, atmospheric view of a river and distant buildings, which provides a sense of place without distracting from the sitter. Peale uses a controlled palette of earth tones, deep blues, and soft yellows to model the form and texture of the uniform. The lighting is focused on the face and upper torso, drawing the viewer's attention to the features of the future president.
This work is one of the earliest depictions of Washington from life. Peale would go on to paint Washington many times throughout his career, creating a visual record of the leader at different stages of his public life. This specific portrait offers a glimpse into the early career of both the artist and the subject. It reflects the stylistic expectations of the colonial elite, who sought to align themselves with the visual traditions of the British gentry. The painting remains a primary source for understanding the public image of Washington during the pre-revolutionary period.
