A traditional Kalighat painting depicting the divine bird Garuda carrying the deities Balarama and Krishna, rendered in bold colours and fluid lines.
This work originates from the Kalighat school of painting, a style that emerged in the nineteenth century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. Artists of this tradition produced affordable works for pilgrims and tourists, often using bold outlines and minimal shading to convey mythological narratives with immediate visual impact. The composition depicts the divine bird Garuda, who serves as the mount for the deity Vishnu, carrying the brothers Balarama and Krishna upon his shoulders.
The figures are rendered with the characteristic fluidity of the Kalighat style. Garuda is depicted with a bright yellow complexion, his large wings extending to frame the central figures. Balarama and Krishna are shown with distinct skin tones, adorned with traditional jewellery and peacock feather headpieces. The artist employs a limited palette, relying on the contrast between the yellow of the mount and the deep blues and reds of the deities to create a balanced visual arrangement. The background remains largely unadorned, a common feature of these paintings which allowed the focus to remain entirely on the mythological subjects.
Kalighat paintings were typically executed on mill-made paper using water-based pigments. The rapid, calligraphic brushwork reflects the commercial nature of the production, yet the execution retains a high degree of precision in the facial features and decorative elements. This piece captures a moment of divine transport, presenting the figures in a manner that is both accessible and reverent. The work provides insight into the popular religious culture of colonial-era Bengal, where traditional iconography met the changing demands of an urbanising society. The preservation of such works allows for an examination of the intersection between folk art traditions and the broader artistic currents of the period.
