Produced in the late nineteenth century, the work originates from the Kalighat school of painting, a style that emerged in the vicinity of the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. Artists of this period often utilised woodblock printing techniques to produce affordable images for pilgrims and local collectors, frequently applying watercolour washes by hand to finish the compositions. The composition is divided into ten distinct rectangular panels, each framed by decorative borders that mimic the curtains often seen in theatrical settings of the era. The figures are rendered with bold, fluid outlines, a characteristic feature of Kalighat art. The iconography follows traditional narratives: from the fish avatar, Matsya, to the final prophesied incarnation, Kalki, mounted on horseback. The figures exhibit a blend of mythological grandeur and contemporary Bengali aesthetic sensibilities, particularly in the attire and facial features of the deities. Kalighat prints are noted for their economy of line and directness. By stripping away unnecessary background detail, the artist focuses the viewer on the symbolic attributes of each avatar.
